System Security 2009 Virus. Need Some Help?
System Security Anti-Virus IS A VIRUS!
Before I get started here, I will tell you now that I am no computer virus guru of any sort. I was recently infected with the System Security Anti-Virus virus though. And not being familiar at all with how to fix a virus, I of course turned to google to find out some information on it. Turns out there is a lot of "technical" advice about this particular virus. But for the average Joe who only knows the basic English language, and doesn't have a lot of money to spend on removal tools and such- there isn't a whole lot of help.
And so here I am, wanting to make someone's life a whole lot easier if I can. Now, if you are infected with this virus and are still reading this article, then you are either on someone else's computer, or have managed to make it into "Safe Mode".
If you don't know what Safe Mode is- no worries. I didn't at first either. Simply shut the power to your computer off and then turn it back on. As soon as you see writing on the screen, (which only takes about 3 seconds after you turn it back on,) start hitting your F8 key at the top of your keyboard. Hit it repeatedly until a screen with prompts comes up.
Select "Safe Mode with Networking." Once you do this, you will be able to connect to the internet. Now don't go surfing the web just yet. Safe Mode leaves you in a basically unprotected state on the computer. Safe Mode is meant to give you the chance to change settings on your computer to fix it, and connect to the internet if need be.
To rid yourself of this virus, go straight to google and type in "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware." Download it and run the scan. This is completely free, and you don't need to buy the premier package. The System Security virus is malware that has been installed on your computer, and it must come off. The Malwarebytes will do this for you. Some people question whether it is malware or spyware. Malware is your answer.
It took me about 5 days to figure this out, so I am trying to get the info out there to save people a lot of time and headache.
Defragment Time
Once you have gotten the malware removed, you need to do a Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup. If you don't know how, simply click on Start, then All Programs, Accessories, and System Tools which will lead you to both.
My computer now, truthfully, is NOT quite the same yet. I'm sure there is something else I need to do to speed things up a bit. But, it is up and running, and at no cost to me.
One other thing that I learned while I was looking all of this information up is that viruses tend to feed off of Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer always seemed to be slow to me anyway, so taking the advice from one of the websites that I visited, I downloaded Mozilla Firefox as my new browser. I love Mozilla now. It is very fast, and has a lot of different options to choose from for your set up.
Just one last note about this virus. If you get into Safe Mode and are able to do a System Restore- then do that first. You should still run the Malwarebytes to be on the safe side, but the System Restore will most likely get your computer running back into Normal Mode anyway.
I myself was not able to do a System Restore, but a couple other people that I know, that had the same virus, they were able to run it without any problems.
Just don't get discouraged by this thing, and don't go spending money on it- you don't need to. Just continue to look up more information on it, and you should be able to figure it out on your own.
Good Luck!

Exactly Nicomp. And I didn't even install it, yet it still locked me up! That was an awful thing to go through. I can't imagine the amount of damage it does when you really do go ahead and install it!
You probably did install it; there are security holes in browsers. Just visiting a site is enough sometimes. If you are logged on with admin permissions, whatever programs sneak through onto your computer will also run with that level.
You are right actually now that I hear you say that. I wondered how it locked my computer up all the way if it wasnt installed. This thing is somehow still messing with my computer. Not near as bad as before- but I know there is something still wrong yet. Nicomp- do you have any ideas on what else I could do?? Any good programs to run and what not. This is still so frustrating!
Run AdAware and SpyBot Search and Destroy. Those are the only 2 free programs I trust on my computers or on my customers' computers. I do this for a living. There are probably some other free products that are OK, but it's not worth the risk. You can download both of them from download.com.
I use Symantec products on all my computers as well as those of my clients. It costs money, but it works.

Yep, the majority of anti-virus programs are actually virus programs. The big giveaway is when you get redirected to a web site and it pops up a window that appears to be counting up viruses on your computer at an alarming rate. It's a hoax. They want you to download an executable program which will install itself on your hard drive and run with whatever permissions you currently have. Most people are logged on with administrator permissions, therefore the viruses have carte blanche to do whatever they like.
